Beaches Near the Cruise Port

Six beaches, six different answers, and the famous one is not the best swim.

The comparison

Beach From the port Swimming Facilities Worth a port day?
Great Bay Walk or water taxi Fair Boardwalk bars, everything Yes, if you want it easy and free
Little Bay 10 min Good Limited Yes, for quiet
Simpson Bay 25 min Good Bars, restaurants Yes, with lunch
Mullet Bay 25–30 min Best Loungers, bars, shade Yes — the swim
Maho 18–25 min Poor Bars, no shade Yes — for aircraft only
Orient Bay 45 min Good, can be choppy Full beach clubs Only on a long call

Drive times are real rather than optimistic, and the Simpson Bay bridge can add fifteen or twenty minutes to anything west of Philipsburg.

The short version

Want a swim? Mullet Bay. It is the best water and the best sand within reach, and it has shade, which nowhere else on this list really does.

Want the plane photograph? Maho, in the early afternoon when the arrivals come in. Watch, then swim somewhere else.

Want it easy? Great Bay, along the Philipsburg boardwalk. You can walk there, it costs nothing to reach, and there are bars and chairs the length of it.

Want a proper beach club day? Orient Bay — but only on a nine-hour call. On six hours it is ninety minutes of driving for three hours of beach.

Want quiet? Little Bay, ten minutes away, with far fewer people than anywhere else this close.

The one that surprises people

Maho is the beach everyone has seen and it is not a good beach.

The shore break is steep, the sand shelves away fast, there is no shade, and it is busy because it is famous. The aircraft are genuinely extraordinary and worth going for. The swimming is not.

Going to Maho for two hours in the early afternoon and Mullet Bay for the rest is the best version of a beach day from this port, and it takes no more time than sitting at one of them all day.

The jet blast fence

At the runway end of Maho there are warning signs about jet blast. They are not decorative — people are injured there most years holding onto the fence during departures.

The arrivals, which are the spectacular part anyway, are perfectly safe to watch from the sand. Stand well clear of anything taking off.

Chairs, shade and toilets

Loungers are for hire at Mullet Bay, Orient Bay and along Great Bay. Simpson Bay and Maho have bars that will find you a seat if you are buying.

Shade is scarce. Mullet Bay has trees at the back; the others effectively have none except what you rent.

Toilets are reliable at Orient Bay and along the Philipsburg boardwalk, limited elsewhere. Worth planning around with children.

Getting there and back

The part that matters on a port day is not getting to a beach — it is getting back. A taxi that drops you at Mullet Bay is not a taxi that is there at half past three when everyone wants to leave at once.

We wait. Your return is planned backwards from your all-aboard, and back on board is guaranteed.

Questions people actually ask

Which beach is closest to the cruise port?

Great Bay, which is the beach along the Philipsburg boardwalk — a 25 to 30 minute walk or a short water taxi. Little Bay is 10 minutes by road and quieter.

What is the best beach near the cruise port?

For swimming, Mullet Bay at 25 to 30 minutes. For the aircraft, Maho. For facilities and a full beach-club day, Orient Bay, but that is 45 minutes each way and only worth it on a long call.

Can I walk to a beach from the ship?

Yes. Great Bay runs the length of the Philipsburg boardwalk and is a genuine walk from the terminal, or a few minutes on the water taxi. It is the free option and perfectly pleasant.

Which beach is best with children?

Mullet Bay — gentler water, real sand and shade at the back. Maho is poor for small children in the water despite what the photographs suggest.
