The Island

Nightlife in St. Maarten

The nightlife is almost entirely on the Dutch side, and it starts later than visitors expect.

Where it actually is

Maho has the densest concentration — bars along the strip behind the beach, a casino, and the places that go latest. It is the natural destination for a proper night.

Simpson Bay is the other strip: bars and restaurants close together, walkable, and easier to combine with dinner. Less late than Maho but more convenient.

Philipsburg has casinos and the boardwalk bars, busier during cruise hours than after dark.

The French side is about dinner. Grand Case has bars and they run later than the kitchens, but nobody drives to the French side for nightlife.

The timing

This is what visitors get wrong.

Dinner runs to about ten. Bars fill from around eleven. The late places go until two or three.

Turning up at Maho at nine expecting atmosphere is a common mistake and a slightly depressing one. Eat first, properly, and go out after.

The casinos

Several on the Dutch side, and gambling is not legal on the French. Entry is free, dress is relaxed by casino standards, and they run late.

They work best as the second stop of an evening rather than the whole of it. Dinner, then a casino, then somewhere for a last drink is the shape most nights out here take.

The actual risk

It is worth being plain about this, because it is not what people expect.

The main nightlife areas are busy, well lit and unremarkable. Ordinary precautions are enough.

The genuine danger on this island at night is the drive. Secondary roads are unlit, some are narrow with drops, and the route between the French side and the Dutch at midnight is not one to learn while tired and having had a couple of drinks.

That, rather than anything else, is why most groups here end up arranging a driver. See is St. Maarten safe for the fuller answer.

Getting home

Taxis exist and they are fixed by zone rather than metered. Two things to know: the tariff charges per person above two passengers, and it rises 25% after ten at night on the Dutch side — 50% after midnight on the French side.

For a group of six making two journeys, that adds up quickly. See the full tariff.

The alternative is a driver for the evening: one price for the vehicle, waiting included, however late it runs and however many stops. See a driver for the evening.

A night that works

Dinner in Simpson Bay or Grand Case. On to Maho around eleven for the bars. The casino if the mood takes you. Home whenever, with someone who knows which villa and which gate.
